Confessions of a Confident Introvert

It can be personally freeing to discover you are an introvert. Sometimes when we think of people who are introverted, we wrongly stereotype them as people who don’t like other people. This stereotype is further from the truth. Most introverts are warm, interested in others, and powerful in their own right.

Three Ways Introverts Build Inner Confidence

Energy Level

Introverts recharge their energy in quiet spaces, while extroverts find their energy in activities involving people. Knowing if you are an introvert or an extrovert will become apparent as you get to know yourself. When I attend networking events, I am spent after the multi-hour event. It has taken me years to be okay with leaving, or saying “No” to something that is not good for my energy. Yet there are some people who go to a networking event and then go to an after hours meet up. The high energy interactions give those individuals the energy they need to continue their night. It’s up to you to decide how to manage your energy. (Side note: introverts enjoy people, but they just need ‘downtime’ to recharge.)

Know Your Strengths

You have all the tools you need to be successful, it is up to you to fully understand how to utilize the ‘tools’ in your toolbox. The tools I am referring to are your skills, competencies, strengths and communication style. It is up to you to optimize your contribution to any given situation.

Communicate

When you become frustrated or feel backed into a corner, many introverts resort to avoiding the problem and the individual causing the discomfort. When you feel yourself withdrawing, suppressing emotions or agreeing, move the conversation to the goal of the project. This collaborative style removes the emotions and focuses on problem solving, welcoming discussion and creativity.
